Across the world, stereotypical and militarised ideals of masculinity are being used to fuel polarisation and strengthen anti-democratic forces. Young men search for answers and belonging in a landscape where simplified narratives often overpower democratic values. Online, these messages spread rapidly and influence how boys and men are shaped, how they handle uncertainty, and how they understand their place in society.

At the same time, other stories about manhood are emerging. In countries such as Sweden, Armenia and Malta, organisations are developing new ways of engaging men and boys, grounded in care, participation and gender equality. By creating alternative communities, they offer something more sustainable and inclusive than the rigid ideals that attract many young men.

In this session, you will hear voices from three different contexts that challenge norms and strengthen democracy and resilience.

The seminar explores:

• How nationalist and authoritarian movements use traditional gender norms as tools for mobilisation and control

• What boys and men themselves say when given the opportunity to reflect, question and engage

• Concrete examples of care-based organising that drives change

• Strategies for building on what works – through organising, activism and international partnerships
